Who owns words?
I came across this article on the BBC news website.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6986940.stm
It is all about how a Christian publishing company is about to be sured over a couple of phrases they used on some posters trying to promote the Bible.
If was talking to you and said the words, "Am I bothered?" What would spring to your mind? Or what about "yeah but no but yeah" or even "Yeah, I know!"
I do agree that people should not breach copywrite laws or illegally download movies or music and stuff, but how, I mean honestly, how can someone copywire the phrase, "yeah i know!" and claim that people have to pay if they are going to use it.
I was attending the Wycliffe Connect Weekend this weekend, and Eddie Arthur was speaking about the Bible and one comment he made was about how the Bible is full of words and you can read it forever and not see God in it, unless the Holy Spirit reveals Him to you. Yet the world has such a huge responce to words. If a celebrity sees that a newspaper has written something about them, they often get upset and kick up a fuss over it. If you make a 1 word comment that is intrepreted by someone as a racial slur, or as religious hatred you can be jailed.
Seem to have lost steam in my writing rant .. What seemed so unfair about being a young male white chrisitan in the UK, every bit as discriminated against a the rest of the world it seems. I guess it jstu a moment of realising how stupid the world we live in really is. The world we live in IS fallen and full of sin and greed and hate and why should I be surprised that i am subjected to some of that? Why should I be surprised that some one is trying to make a financial gain from a string of common words. I just find it a bit annoying, the arrogance of some nutter on teh TV who things they can string a few words togheter nad sue anyone who usees them without permission. What woudl Jesus do? Whould he have used the slogan in the first place? Would he have got permisison? He was a bit radical in his time, did a few crazy things that would have got locked up for! Whips in the temple springs to my mind!
ARRGGHHH I don't really get it! maybe I should get a cup of coffee...
